With these challenging and abrupt life changes, things started spiraling out of control. I moved to California from a small town in the Midwest after my parents divorced. But where I am at today is not where I have always been. All of this has been a journey, a discovery of myself. Being in nature, meditation and yoga have really helped me to stay center and grounded. I am a licensed skydiver, avid hiker and climber and enjoy learning anything that allows me to grow and face my fears. With now publishing his first book, building multiple other successful businesses, and always living life to the fullest, he empathizes and connects with his clients on a level that not only inspires others to be the creator of their own stories, but to teach others the way to becoming their own best friend. These tribulations were incredibly hard on Preston, but he held strong with his mental health and spirituality during what he calls it, “his precious time on this planet.” Today, he uses his life experience as the fuel in which to help others struggling with mental health and addiction. After freeing himself from the shackles of addiction, he lost his father to suicide and his brother to a fentanyl overdose. While Preston’s passion for life is truly contagious, his desire to live a beautiful and productive life only came about after he walked away from addiction and the mindset that came with it. Of course, his ability to inspire greatness in others has come about only after facing his own tribulations. His commitment to showing others the beauty of life and the depth of their potential allows Preston to become a partner in each client’s life both during and after a client’s stay at SoCal Mental Health. Preston Durnford carries an unmatched level of passion and dedication to help others. Whatever you can do to make it easier on yourself to start means you will be more willing to stick with it for the long term. Is the room cold? Is the light hitting your house plants just right? Note it all and do the same thing tomorrow. Take in what it is you’re seeing or sensing next. What you’re feeling is valid and you are valid. If you’re feeling overwhelming sadness, note it and remind yourself it’s okay.

Be present and notice what it is you’re feeling. Try 30-seconds of mindfulness while you’re having your morning cup of coffee. You can start doing this by building in one small act of mindfulness to your day wherever you can. You can then employ some of your self-care techniques to keep from spiraling into a typical, negative pattern. Meditation can also help you recognize when these negative thought patterns start to show. Mindful meditation teaches you that your thoughts and feelings are valid, and to pay attention to them without harsh inner criticism. Mindful meditation is one way in which you can show kindness to yourself and help manage your symptoms. Next time, try speaking kindly to yourself as if you were speaking to a friend. Instead, it’s perfectly okay to say “I’m grateful for what I have, but I still feel sad.” How can you implement this when you’re not feeling your best? For example, stop using words like “should,” “have to,” or “must.” “I have a great job and family, I shouldn’t feel so sad.” You’re placing unnecessary and harmful blame on yourself by saying this.

By showing yourself compassion and love via speaking kindly, you’re handing the positive power back to yourself. Talk to yourself as if you’re speaking to a loved one, family member, or even a friend. If you catch yourself talking to yourself in a negative manner, try flipping the switch. From that same line of thinking, repetition of positive words can make an impact. Words have power, and repetition of negative words only perpetuates that cycle. When you’re feeling low, it’s so easy to get caught in a negative cycle of speaking to yourself.
